Traffic Alert - Blasting Update
DATE: Thursday, October 16, 2025
Blasting Activities Scheduled to Begin Friday, October 17
The start of blasting activities has been rescheduled for Friday, October 17, and will continue through the end of November. Blasting activities will take place along U.S. Route 2/7 (U.S. 2/7) between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive with initial blasts along U.S. 2/7 and Mountain View Drive near the CVS Pharmacy and the Interstate 89 (I-89) northbound on-ramp. Up to two blasting events will take place each weekday and will be restricted to daytime hours with crews off the roadway by 3 PM. Blasting activities are weather-dependent.
Each blasting event will consist of a series of small blasts, which will occur underground and be contained using blasting mats. There will be no visible explosions such as fireballs, flying debris, or major dust clouds. The blasts will not be loud and will not cause buildings to shake or rattle, however, small rumblings and vibrations in the ground may be felt depending on your proximity to the blasting location.
Before blasting, vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic will be temporarily restricted from the blasting area. Uniformed Traffic Officers (UTOs) and barricades will be placed at either end of the blasting area on U.S. 2/7 and the I-89 off-ramps and flaggers will be present at adjacent businesses and sideroads to prevent motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists from entering the blasting area. In addition, UTOs and SDI construction vehicles will initiate rolling roadblocks between Exits 14 and 17 along I-89 northbound and southbound to slow traffic down and create a gap in traffic such that the I-89 bridges over the Exit 16 interchange are clear of vehicles during each blasting event. Once the area is secured, the blasting event will occur.
Audible signals will be used to notify the public of an upcoming blasting event, which will include three whistles to indicate a five-minute warning, two whistles to indicate a one-minute warning, and one whistle to indicate the all-clear, followed by the blasting event. A blasting specialist will clear the area before allowing motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists to reenter the blasting area. The public can sign up to receive additional notifications an hour prior to each blasting event by robocall. To sign up to receive robocalls, please contact the project team and provide a preferred phone number.
