Weekly Construction Update - Thursday, July 2, 2026

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Crews will be off-site by 3 p.m. today, Thursday, July 2, in observance of Independence Day (Fourth of July) and will return to the project area on Sunday night, July 5.
TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION:
Nightly, starting the evening of Sunday, July 5, through the morning of Friday, July 10, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless otherwise noted:
- The I-89 Exit 16 North off-ramp will be fully closed at night from 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, through 6 a.m. on Monday, July 6, and again at 9 p.m. on Monday, July 6, until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, for excavation and boxcutting. The I-89 Exit 16 North off-ramp will reclose at 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, through 6 a.m. on Friday, July 10, for paving.
- The ramp will be open during daytime hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) throughout the week but will be reduced to gravel Monday through Thursday.
- Motorists traveling northbound along I-89 seeking to exit the interstate at Exit 16 will be detoured to Exit 17 in Colchester or can seek alternative routes. At the Exit 17 interchange, motorists will be directed to travel east on U.S. Route 2 (U.S. 2) toward the Chimney Corner intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. Route 2/7 (U.S. 2/7) before following U.S. 2/7 south toward the Exit 16 interchange. A supplemental Traffic Alert will be issued prior to the overnight ramp closures.
- Lane closures along alternating sides of U.S. 2/7 near its intersection with Mountain View Drive on Tuesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 8. Two-way traffic will be maintained with lane shifts.
Daily, starting the morning of Monday, July 6, through the afternoon of Friday, July 10, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted:
- Single-lane closure on either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the Interstate 89 overpass bridges, with two-way traffic maintained.
- Independent utility companies will also be on-site on weekdays during daytime hours conducting work in this area under these traffic constraints. The work zones and traffic control will be coordinated with the Exit 16 DDI Project.
- Single-lane closure on either side of U.S. 2/7 between the Interstate 89 overpass bridges and Mountain View Drive, with two-way traffic maintained.
Please be advised that portions of U.S. 2/7 and the I-89 North off-ramp will be reduced to gravel surfaces starting Sunday night through Saturday morning. Motorists should slow down, use caution, and follow traffic control personnel's instructions and signage. In addition, motorists should expect significant delays when traveling through the work zone and along adjacent roadways. Please plan additional travel time or consider alternative routes.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:
Nighttime work this week will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., starting the evening of Sunday, July 5, through the morning of Friday, July 10. On Sunday and Monday night, crews will work to remove asphalt and boxcut along the I-89 North off-ramp. This work will temporarily reduce the ramp to gravel. The ramp will be repaved on Thursday night into Friday morning. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, crews will install conduit sleeves at the U.S. 2/7 and Mountain View Drive intersection.
Daytime work will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting the morning of Monday, July 6, through the afternoon of Friday, July 10. Throughout the week, crews will install mast arm foundations and streetlights along U.S. 2/7 between the I-89 overpass bridges and Mountain View Drive. Early next week, crews will also perform sidewalk prep along this segment. Late next week, curb installation is scheduled to take place along either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the I-89 overpass bridges. Independent utility work will take place throughout the week, with Green Mountain Power on-site to relocate utility poles along either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the I-89 South ramps.
Crews work to reconstruction U.S 2/7 and the Exit 16 Interchange Ramps in preparation for the implementation of the Diverging Diamond Interchange.
VTrans Colchester Exit 17 Project
- Project Area: I-89 Exit 17, U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road, U.S. 2 between Chimney Corner and Jasper Mine Road
- Next week: Mid-week, crews will install wrong-way detection signage along the Exit 17 northbound and southbound off-ramps.
- Traffic Impacts:
- Tuesday – Wednesday, 6 AM – 8 PM | Lane width reductions and lane shifts along the Exit 17 northbound and southbound off-ramps for signage installation, with traffic maintained along the ramps.

City of Winooski Main Street Revitalization Project
- Project Area: Main Street in Winooski, between the railroad bridge near Maple Street and the Colchester town line near Checkerbay Carwash
- Next week: Early next week, crews will conduct activities to prepare for final paving and continue sidewalk construction on the west side of Main Street north of Tigan Street. Tuesday through Friday, crews will conduct milling and final paving on Main Street between Stevens Street and Tigan Street and intersecting side streets (West Spring, Stevens, Lafountain, Burling, and Bellevue Streets). Utility pole removal on Main Street between Spring Street and Tigan Street will continue throughout the week. Wednesday through Friday, crews will pour curb at the Winooski Fire Department and a section of sidewalk at the Main Street and Spring Street intersection. All concrete and paving work is weather-dependent.
- Traffic Impacts:
- 24/7 | Main Street southbound lane reduction at Tigan Street intersection
- Monday, 7 AM to 7 PM | Tigan Street closure at Main Street intersection, with traffic detoured via West Spring Street and Weaver Street.
- Tuesday – Friday, 6 AM to 7 PM | Lane closures and traffic shifts will be in effect on Main Street between Stevens Street and Tigan Street, with northbound traffic only allowed. Southbound traffic on Main Street will be detoured via Tigan Street, Weaver Street, and West Spring Street, with signage posted to guide drivers. West Spring Street will be temporarily closed during milling operations. During this time, the southbound detour, including truck traffic, will be rerouted via Stevens Street. Stevens Street, Lafountain Street, Burling Street, and Bellevue Street will have intermittent closures at their Main Street intersections for milling and paving. On-street parking on Main Street and intersecting side streets near Main Street will be restricted and marked with traffic cones and signs.
