Weekly Construction Update - Friday, July 24, 2026

TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION: Nightly, starting the evening of Sunday, July 26, through the morning of Friday, July 31, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless otherwise noted:

  • Lane closures along alternating sides of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive, with two-way traffic maintained under lane shifts.
  • Short intermittent stoppages will be in effect along U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive. Each stoppage will last approximately 15 minutes.
  • The I-89 Exit 16 South off-ramp will be fully closed at night from 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, through 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29.
  • The I-89 Exit 16 North off-ramp will be fully closed at night from 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, through 6 a.m. on Thursday, July 30.
    • The ramps will be open during the daytime hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.).
    • Motorists traveling along I-89 seeking to exit the interstate at Exit 16, during each respective ramp closure, will be detoured to Exit 17 in Colchester. Motorists traveling southbound and motorists traveling northbound along I-89 seeking to exit the interstate at Exit 16 will be direct to take the Exit 17 South off-ramp and North off-ramp, respectively. At the Exit 17 interchange, motorists will be directed to travel east on U.S. Route 2 (U.S. 2) toward the Chimney Corner intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. Route 2/7 (U.S. 2/7) before following U.S. 2/7 south toward the Exit 16 interchange. Supplemental Traffic Alerts will be issued prior to the overnight ramp closures.

Daily, starting the morning of Monday, July 27, through the afternoon of Friday, July 31, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted:

  • Single-lane closure on either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive, with two-way traffic maintained.
  • Independent utility companies will be conducting work along U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the I-89 South ramps under single-lane closures on either side of U.S. 2/7, with two-way traffic maintained.
  • Thursday, July 30, and Friday, July 31, single-lane closure on either side of U.S. 2/7 between Mountain View Drive and Hercules Drive, with two-way traffic maintained.

Motorists should slow down, use caution, and follow traffic control personnel's instructions and signage. In addition, motorists should expect significant delays when traveling through the work zone and along adjacent roadways. Please plan additional travel time or consider alternative routes.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Nighttime work this week will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., starting the evening of Sunday, July 26, through the morning of Friday, July 31. Crews will be installing overhead sign structures along U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive, and on the I-89 North and South off-ramps.

Daytime work will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting the morning of Monday, July 27, through the afternoon of Friday, July 31. Crews will prep sidewalks and install stamped concrete along either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive. Thursday and Friday, crews will widen the roadway and clean up ditching along U.S. 2/7 between Mountain View Drive and Hercules Drive. Independent utility work will take place throughout the week, with Green Mountain Power on-site to relocate utility poles along either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the I-89 South ramps.

Crews reestablished turf in disturbed areas along U.S. 2/7.

VTrans Colchester Exit 17 Project

  • Project Area: I-89 Exit 17, U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road, U.S. 2 between Chimney Corner and Jasper Mine Road
  • Next week: Crews will complete punchlist items, including applying protective seal to bridge and installing expansion joint material at the bridge abutments.
  • Traffic Impacts:
    • Monday – Friday, 6 AM – 3 PM | Single lane closure on I-89 North at Exit 17 interchange.
    • Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 7 PM | Single lane closure on I-89 South at Exit 17 interchange.
    • Monday – Friday, 6 AM – 7 PM | Lane shifts on U.S. 2 bridge over I-89.

City of Winooski Main Street Revitalization Project

  • Project Area: Main Street in Winooski, between the railroad bridge near Maple Street and the Colchester town line near Checkerbay Carwash
  • Next week: A subcontractor is scheduled to be on-site to complete line striping and pavement marking installation on Main Street between Maple Street and the Winooski/Colchester town line throughout the week, weather permitting. Traffic signal work, including the installation of mast arm poles, will take place at the Main Street and Spring Street intersection and Winooski Fire Department. Permanent signage installation will start mid-week. In addition, crews will install permeable pavers, plant trees, place topsoil, seed, and mulch and conduct site restoration on Main Street between Stevens Street and the Winooski/Colchester town line. Green Mountain Power will also be on-site to conduct independent utility work on Main Street near the Winooski School District.
  • Traffic Impacts:
    • Monday – Friday, 7 AM – 7 PM | Short mobile work zones on Main Street, starting near Maple Street and moving north along the corridor to the Winooski/Colchester town line for pavement marking installation. Traffic control within the short mobile work zones will include lane closures, lane shifts, on-street parking restrictions, and potentially alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Maple Street, Mansion Street, Union Street, Platt Street, West and East Spring Street, Stevens Street, Lafountain Street, Burling Street, Bellevue Street, Normand Street, and Tigan Street will be intermittently closed at their Main Street intersections for pavement marking installation. Flaggers will be stationed at the Main Street intersections to guide drivers. 
    • Monday – Wednesday, 7 AM – 7 PM | Intermittent, 10-minute traffic holds at the Main Street and Spring Street intersection to install the traffic signal poles. Lane closures and shifts on East and West Spring Street, with traffic maintained. Possible full closure of West Spring Street at Main Street intersection.
    • Wednesday – Friday, 7 AM – 7 PM | Intermittent, 10-minute traffic holds on Main Street at the Winooski Fire Department to install the traffic signal poles.
    • Monday – Friday, 7 AM – 7 PM | Lane reductions and flagging operations on Main Street near the Winooski School District for Green Mountain Power’s independent utility work.
