Weekly Construction Update - Friday, September 11, 2026
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Project Team plans to implement the new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) traffic pattern on U.S. Route 2/7 (U.S. 2/7) at the I-89 Exit 16 interchange in Colchester overnight the evening of Wednesday, September 16, into the early morning hours of Thursday, September 17, weather permitting. TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION: Nightly, starting the evening of Sunday, September 13, through the morning of Friday, September 18, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless otherwise noted:
- Starting Sunday, at 9 p.m. through Monday, at 6 a.m., U.S. 2/7 will be fully closed between Rathe Road and Sunderland Woods Road. Traffic will be detoured via Rathe Road, S. Oak Circle, and Sunderland Drive.
- Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, single lane closures will be in place along alternating sides of U.S. 2/7 between Hercules Drive and Rathe Road. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
- Wednesday, lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive, with two-way traffic maintained with flaggers as crews work to prepare for the traffic pattern change.
- In the early morning hours of Thursday, the new Diverging Diamond Interchange traffic pattern will be implemented at the Exit 16 Interchange, weather permitting. Vehicles will be briefly shifted to the left side of the roadway as they travel through the Exit 16 interchange. Traffic signals will control the crossover points. Supplemental Traffic Alerts will be issued in advance.
Daily, starting the morning of Monday, September 14, through the afternoon on Friday, September 18, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted:
- Monday through Wednesday, periodic outermost lane closures on either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
Motorists should slow down, use caution, and follow traffic control personnel's instructions and signage. In addition, motorists should expect significant delays when traveling through the work zone and along adjacent roadways. Please plan additional travel time or consider alternative routes.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Nighttime work this week will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., starting the evening of Sunday, September 13, through the morning of Friday, September 18. Sunday, crews will be installing drainage infrastructure across U.S. 2/7 between Rathe Road and Sunderland Woods Road. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, crews will be widening U.S. 2/7 between Hercules Drive and Rathe Road. Wednesday, crews will be installing line striping and pavement markings, installing the remaining roadway signage, activating the traffic signals, removing the temporary traffic signals, and uncovering bagged signage and traffic signal infrastructure along U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive. The Diverging Diamond Interchange will become fully operational that evening. This work and shifting traffic patterns to the DDI is weather dependent.
Daytime work will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting the morning of Monday, September 14, through the afternoon on Friday, September 18. Monday through Wednesday, crews will continue constructing sidewalk and stamped concrete and installing curb along both sides of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive and conducting repairs to the piers of the I-89 overpass bridges. Thursday and Friday, minimal activities will occur as crews monitor the newly established traffic pattern.

- Project Area: Main Street in Winooski, between the railroad bridge near Maple Street and the Colchester town line near Checkerbay Carwash
- Next week: Crews will complete the remaining plantings and tree replacements and continue conducting general clean up and punch list work throughout the project limits.
- Traffic Impacts:
- Monday – Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM | Main Street within the project limits will have intermittent shoulder closures, with most of the work conducted off the roadway. One day next week, crews will set up a short mobile work zone with flaggers on Main Street near Maple Street for minor line striping work.
