Weekly Construction Update - Friday, June 5, 2026

TRAFFIC ALERT: This evening, Friday, June 5, starting at 7 p.m., continuing through Saturday morning, June 6, at 6 a.m., the Interstate 89 (I-89) Exit 16 southbound on-ramp will be fully closed. Motorists seeking to travel southbound on I-89 should use the Exit 15 southbound on-ramp in Winooski or seek alternative routes. Nightly, starting the evening of Sunday, June 7, through the morning of Saturday, June 13, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless otherwise noted:

  • Lane closures along the east side of U.S. Route 2/7 (U.S. 2/7), the northbound lanes, between the I-89 southbound ramps and Mountain View Drive, with two-way traffic maintained through traffic shifts onto the west side of U.S. 2/7.
  • Intermittent lane closures with traffic shifts at the intersections of U.S. 2/7 and Hercules Drive and U.S. 2/7 and Rathe Road, with two-way traffic maintained.
  • From Thursday, June 11, at 7 p.m. through Friday, June 12, at 6 a.m., U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the I-89 southbound ramps will be under lane closures with traffic shifted to the other side. Two-way traffic will be maintained.

Daily, starting the morning of Monday, June 8, through the afternoon of Friday, June 12, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted:

  • Single-lane closure on either side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the I-89 southbound ramps, with two-way traffic maintained.
  • Intermittent lane closures with traffic shifts at the intersections of U.S. 2/7 and Hercules Drive and U.S. 2/7 and Rathe Road, with two-way traffic maintained.

Please be advised that portions of U.S. 2/7 will be reduced to a gravel surface starting Sunday night through Saturday morning. Motorists should slow down, use caution, and follow traffic control personnel's instructions and signage. In addition, motorists should expect significant delays when traveling through the work zone and along adjacent roadways. Please plan additional travel time or consider alternative routes.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Nighttime work this week will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., starting the evening of Sunday, June 7, through the morning of Saturday, June 13. Throughout the week, crews will continue to remove asphalt and boxcut along the east side of U.S. 2/7 (northbound) between the I-89 southbound ramps and Mountain View Drive, starting where they left off near the I-89 overpass bridges and working north toward Mountain View Drive. This work will reduce a section of U.S. 2/7 to gravel. On Thursday night, crews will pave the second lift along the east side of U.S. 2/7 (northbound) between South Park Drive and the I-89 overpass bridges. On Friday night, crews will temporarily pave the gravel section of U.S. 2/7 and install temporary line markings. Throughout the week, crews will install conduit sleeves for the new traffic signals at the intersections of U.S. 2/7 and Hercules Drive and U.S. 2/7 and Rathe Road.

Daytime work will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., starting the morning of Monday, June 8, through the afternoon of Friday, June 12. Crews will continue sidewalk preparation along either side of U.S. 2/7 and continue to install the cable connections between the new traffic signals (interconnect) along the west side of U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and the I-89 southbound ramps. Crews will install foundations for the new traffic signal infrastructure at the intersections of U.S. 2/7 and Hercules Drive and U.S. 2/7 and Rathe Road.

VTrans Colchester Exit 17 Project

  • Project Area: I-89 Exit 17, U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road, U.S. 2 between Chimney Corner and Jasper Mine Road
  • Project Update: Crews will be off-site next week. Overhead sign installation is anticipated to take place mid to late June.
  • Construction: Spring 2024 – Summer 2026

City of Winooski Main Street Revitalization Project

  • Project Area: Main Street in Winooski, between the railroad bridge near Maple Street and the Colchester town line near Checkerbay Carwash
  • Next week: Crews will perform sidewalk and driveway work on Main Street between Burling Street and the Winooski/Colchester town line, as well as on Tigan and Normand Streets. They will also continue planting trees, installing cobble pavers, and completing streetlight wiring and fixture installation between Bellevue and Tigan Streets.
  • Traffic Impacts: 
    • 24/7 | Main Street southbound lane reduction at Tigan Street intersection
    • Monday – Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM | Traffic signals at the Main Street and Tigan Street intersection set to flash, with flaggers directing traffic at the intersection. Lane closure on Tigan Street at Main Street intersection, allowing westbound traffic only. Eastbound traffic on Tigan Street detoured to Weaver Street and West Spring Street. Intermittent travel and parking lane reductions on Main Street, with two-way traffic maintained on Main Street between Tigan Street and Spring Street. Potential for alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers along this segment as needed.
